From Birley High School...

Bernard Barry was one of a team of caring, belief-driven and determined teaching staff that brought about an era of outstanding education, personal and skills development for a generation of students and their families from Hulme, Moss Side and the surrounding areas of Manchester. It is clear from his work at Birley, that Bernard cared deeply for others. He championed the idea and ethos of charitable giving - and that at a time when it wasn't as common as today. Indeed in a pioneering sense, Bernard set a train in motion that - certainly for me - created the ideals of corporate responsibility and supporting others who need help and direction from time-to-time. Bernard (and the Birley Team) believed in everyone of their charges, that everyone had the opportunity and scope to develop, that education was about life and skills and mutual respect. It's somewhat ironic, given Bernard's life story and beliefs that his expectations of high standards earned him some unfortunate nicknames - but then children are so very cruel. He knew this of course and made sure it worked for him and everyone he worked with and taught. I shared many a football tale with Bernard and although he wasn't my Housemaster ( I was in the opposing Keller House with Isabella Gleave) - I am most happy and incredibly proud to have known Bernard, to recognise him as a mentor in many ways and share that the Birley Facebook pages are full of tributes to a man, teacher and guiding-light, admired by all. I can see him now, his knowing smile, his watchful eye and feel his all-telling tolerance. Much loved Bernard, a jewel in the Birley crown, I wish you well on your journey and thank you for your guidance, leadership and friendship. Pete Bradshaw (Birley 1969-1976)
