"what a kind and gifted person he was. I am sure he touched many lives in his own lively and enthusiastic way" Cynthia Rennie, widow of former teaching colleague. "I have so many happy memories of time spent with Bernard over the years" Kate Richardson, former teaching colleague "I've known Bernard all my life which makes the loss of such a fine person and comrade all the more poignant" Mike Luft, neighbour and fellow volunteer at Working Class Movement Library "He always did a thorough job on whatever work he undertook. His book on Spain continues to be appreciated. It is good ...[he could] ...both write it and launch it so vigorously" Maggie Cohen, Chair, Trustees, Working Class Movement Library. "B.... was clearly a remarkable man and led a life striving to leave the world a better place than he found it" Jimmy Jump, Secretary, International Brigades Memorial Trust. "He was a lovely man and so good with children, helping them especially with school work, he was so patient and so knowledgeable...He will be missed by so many people whose lives he touched" "Bernard was a very dear friend, always ready to help and so knowledgeable about so many things, his French was so useful when we had Cosette staying with us as she was determined not to try to speak English, so he translated for us and took her and Stella on trips out as we were at work. Such patience. He loved his garden and he and Vera transformed the back garden and they travelled widely together which they both enjoyed. He will be missed by so many people and our lives will be poorer for his passing" Lorraine, former neighbour. "I have many fond memories of him, and .. [his first wife, Bertha].. and of growing up with Rica, Judith, and the rest of our many cousins" Karl, nephew. "He was obviously a wonderful man" Mary Lidgard, Hon. Secrtary, Trustees, Medical and Scientific Aid for Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. I am reflecting now on the many times over the years that I talked to him about his life and his involvement with the Working Class Movement Library, and how much these conversations meant to me. I have many happy memories of him and also of his and Vera's friendship with my Mum" Anne, daughter of one of Vera's cousins. "It is so sad to hear of the passing of someone we have known for a lifetime" Pam and Ezra, sister and brother-in-law of his first wife, Bertha. "We were neighbours of Vera and Bernrd...at No 20 ...They were a lovely couple" Mavis and Alan Britner, former neighbours. "He is such a gentle soul and he has done a lot for me. I owe a lot to him, and I will never forget him" Inge Giebelhausen, friend from Germany "Although not a very close relative, Bernard was always a supportive one, and could always be counted upon to attend family occasions. He came to both my parents' funerals, and the evening shiva too.. the man of deep principle that was your father" Stephen Brown, son of a cousin-by-marriage. "How special that he managed to send that lovely message to Sadie so recently" Deborah, niece, and Sarah. "We have very fond memories of him - he was a remarkable man. One of my earliest memories of him is standing at the bus-stop near Boggart Hole Clough doing a cross-word whilst waiting for me to get off the bus to go to your house. It was Uncle Bernard who arranged a French penfriend for me so I could improve my French! Jeanne Delaux.,who helped him find the penfriend - Ghyslane -then invited myself and Ghyslane to a memorable Poulet Basquaise in her flat in Montmartre. I also remember going with him and Judith to Stratford-on-Avon to improve our English Lit. knowledge! We saw about 3 Shakespeare plays that week, with actors such as Ian Holm and David Warner. Your dad also encouraged me to go to the Cercle Francais in Manchester. Your dad and my parents were of course very close friends, and had a number of holidays and outings together along with Vera. After my mum died and my dad met Joan, it was lovely that a new friendship formed between the four of them, and they continued to have outings and holidays together. It is good to have so many special memories of a remarkable man" Michelle, daughter of cousin-by-marriage. "Glyn's memory of his time with Bernard is of a strict, fair, compassionate teacher and of a hoarder. Some of his newspaper teaching aids were yellow with age. In sad passing but he had a fulfilling life" Glyn and Ann Young, former teaching colleagues. "I remember such wisdom, strength and warmth from him on the many occasions I met him" Max W. friend of Bernard's middle granddaughter. "He was a great man" Margaret Eddisford, Communist Party comrade. "He and I worked together really well as colleagues when we were 'Housemasters' at Birley and he fully supported me when I became Deputy. Bernard and I really got on well together. We were both of the old school type regarding discipline, dress code etc. and really wanting every pupil to succeed in life" Nellie Moore, former teaching colleague. "It wasn't easy to make Dad smile, his wit was dry and reflective but he was so proud of his published articles during his many amazing years at the Working Class Library. His loss leaves so few of that kind of quiet, dedicated class heroes" Aubrey Garson,(now in U.S.A.) Communist Party comrade.
